On Sunday May 19th we will celebrate Pentecost. On the day of Pentecost the Apostles were all together. Suddenly, a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from Heaven and filled the house they were in. Then tongues of fire came to rest on each of them, and they were filled with the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:1-4). This giving of the Holy Spirit was to equip them for their calling as witnesses for Christ in the world (Acts 1:8). The Holy Spirit would lead, teach, and speak through them, as they carried the Gospel of Christ to the nations. For Pentecost Sunday, the color of our altar cloths and paraments is red, a power color. That is appropriate for a Sunday when we remember the power and fire of the Holy Spirit, “The Lord and Giver of Life.”
